ABA Therapy Treatment

Applied Behavioral Analysis Therapy

As part of our ongoing commitment to client success, we provide ABA therapy in a positive learning environment. ABA, or Applied Behavioral Analysis, is an evidence-based approach to intervention that helps children with autism learn a variety of functional skills, such as communication, following directions, turn taking, and toileting. ABA treatment focuses on arranging the environment in ways that promote child success. We make it a point to individualize our approach according to the needs of each child. The specific techniques we use depends on each child’s initial assessment and progress.

School Readiness

We offer school readiness as part of our ABA treatment program at PediaPlex. By introducing this school readiness track we are working towards bridging the gap between our 1:1 ABA Intervention at PediaPlex and a child’s typical school environment. Our BCBA (Board Certified Behavior Analyst) will individually identify which goals are appropriate for your child based on specific skills evaluated using the VB-MAPP (Verbal Behavior Milestones Assessment and Placement Program). We will offer goals targeting literacy and math skills built into their daily ABA session schedule as approved. Our approach to ABA treatment will stay true to the basic principles of ABA and remain at a 1:1 child-therapist ratio. In addition, we will utilize materials that will help promote your child’s progress developmentally, and with the ultimate goal of furthering the generalization of skills in the school, home, and community environments. Our belief is that this intensive therapy approach combined with other therapy services will help a child maximize their progress.

Strategies Used In ABA Therapy Are Shaping and Chaining

Shaping consists of starting where the child is already at in terms of skill level and reinforcing closer and closer approximations to the overall goal. For example, if the goal is for a child to sit at the table for 10 minutes, and they are only able to sit at the table for 30 seconds, we would start with delivering preferred items or activities for every 30 seconds that child remains seated. Following the child’s success with sitting for 30 seconds at a time, we would increase the time slowly until they are sitting successfully for 10 consecutive minutes.

We work with parents in the Dallas, Fort Worth, Southlake, and Frisco areas to help train them in this method of therapy so the entire family can feel successful. We monitor each approximation in order to keep track of achievements, and we make adjustments as needed.

Chaining means dividing a larger task into small tasks. For example, tying ones shoelaces involves following several different steps (e.g. Putting the shoes on, holding the laces in each hand, crossing the laces, etc.). First we may start to teach one of the behaviors within the larger task of tying your shoes. Once the child is able to independently do the first task, the next step would be introduced, thus building upon each step toward a new behavior. Chaining requires reinforcement and monitoring of each step until the child is able to complete the entire sequence without assistance.

Use of ABA Therapy Reflects Commitment to Client Success

When families are ready to discover what ABA therapy is, the members of our professional team collaborate in helping them understand the benefits. We support families by guiding their decisions about the best way to treat their children. At the initial assessment, we prepare a plan of action. We begin working at the child’s current level to establish goals and then determine the steps necessary to reach those goals.

Children in our program receive one-on-one instruction throughout the day, but they also have group time in order to practice social skills, such as taking turns and following group instructions. Because we want the entire family to feel successful, we train parents on strategies for practicing new behaviors at home. We believe in open communication and full cooperation with parents in order to fully support their children’s.
